Precious metal chain for jewellery has been around for a long time. However, The era of the Byzantine Empire brought many things, including the fine art of crafting jewellery. Basically when man first began working extensively with gold back in Neolithic times he found that certain metals, most notably pure gold, were extremely ductile and could be hammered and stretched to a great degree. It took some time for the technology to catch up with the concept. This chain, called Gull Chain, is still used today in hanging applications.
This style has stayed with us and is extremely sought after. In the 1800s, a Frenchman named Gull obtained a patent for a similar chain for use on a bicycle. With the invention of wire, man could now take something rigid like metal and turn it into something flexible like chain. During the Middle Ages, there was a Roman Empire also known as the Byzantine Empire. Chain making has always been, up until the middle of the 18th century, a labor-intensive time consuming hand operation.
Problems in the manufacturing and processing of steel prevented chain growth until the 19th century, when new technologies made steel chain and bearings realities. This interesting and wonderous ancient civilization brought much to our world history. It was a well-versed art and most books on jewelry will demonstrate basic techniques on making chain by hand. They also have given us the style of Byzantine Chains, crafted in honor of the fine art of jewellery making that came from this society.
